Bugs, Bugs and more bugs!!!
We at UBM encounter hoarders and unsanitary living conditions everyday. From the elderly to the sick and shut in, any group with decreased mobility can fall victim to unclean living conditions and bug infestations. However, sometimes we come across infestations that are extreme and require the clients to be hospitalized due to the deplorable living conditions and sometimes mental illness. Its important to remember that a lot of our clients homes fall in to disrepair because they are unable to prevent it not for lack of trying. We do our best to work closely with social workers and to get these homes in order so that our clients can once again feel comfortable in their own homes. This case is an example of what can happen when we let these people slip through the cracks. This is the home of an 83 year old widower. His wife passed 2 years ago and the home has been in decline since then.

This is the area area underneath the bed. You are looking at a combination of bed bug eggs, roach eggs and wastes.
Its enough to drive you mad!!!!
We did a job in the Bronx that took 6 people 8 hours to dig through. When we were done we had 800 bags of garbage. We also had to do bedbug extermination twice. Its important to remember that bed bugs can travel from a home like this one to a neater home. Bed bugs are not necessarily a sign of bad housekeeping. Bed Bugs feed off of people not filth!!!
Ring the Alarm!!!
We got a call to clean this home because the client was denied home care due to the clutter. This much clutter is considered a a fire hazard but you have to wonder how anyone can get in this place let alone get out.
Buried Alive!!!!
This Job was in Manhattan. The tenant was taken to the hospital for psychiatric care after we finished the clean up. It took 8 hours and with 6 people to clean up this place. When we were done we had 500 bags of garbage.
Bed Bugs Galore!!!!
Yesterday we were called upon to do a heavy duty cleaning in Brooklyn. It turned out to be a pretty tough job!!! An elderly lady answered the door and while we were conversing with her we observed bed bugs crawling on her face, hair and clothing! We deal with bed bug infestations all the time but this even our guys rattled with this one. The woman was 90 years old living alone and probably suffered from a mental illness. Its important to keep track of our elderly relatives and not let our lives get so busy that we allow them to live in such conditions. EMS was called and she was taken to the hospital to be treated while a relative stayed behind to supervise our cleaning. In reality she will probably be sent back to the apartment so we carted away all infested furniture, exterminated and cleaned what we could. We have some pics posted so you can see what a nest and excrement look like.
No one here but us books!!!
- This is a client in Manhattan who was bound to a wheel chair. Inadequate handicap access made it difficult for him to move about so most of his entertainment was in the form of books, comics, magazines and video cassettes. Sadly, his condition also made it hard to keep his home clean and thats when UBM was called in to save the day…and the apartment!

Its looks like the owner tried to organize...
King of the Hill…of clutter

- This was an 80 year old client in Brooklyn that was unable to get around on his own let alone clean. It took 5 UBM workers all day and over 600 bags of garbage to make this place inhabitable. We encounter these types of jobs everyday and it makes you wonder who may be living next to you that could use a helping hand?

Slanted walls indicate an attic type space

- The further in there is more clutter
A very bad scene
Can you imagine your bedroom getting out of control.
Even the living Room is out of control
However, we do make progress by the end of the session. One can now see the floor and actually stand on it. and, we discovered a sink. It has been not used in a long time. The client can get worn down and we have to stop and sometimes they don’t want us to go all the way. I believe we had 6 guys on her apartment.
